Dr. Raffaele literally "wrote the book" -- or at least the most recent book -- on birds of the Caribbean. The Caribbean is a common vacation destination, but it also hosts hundreds of bird species found nowhere else in the world, and should be visited by more birders. Here's the description: Herb Raffaele will take us on a tour of the Caribbean islands, highlighting the region's bird life, including its endangered parrots and steps underway to protect them, the impact of volcanic eruptions on the Montserrat Oriole, the rediscovery of species long thought to be extinct, and the role of "James Bond" in the study of the region's avifauna. As Chief of the Office of International Conservation of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Raffaele coordinates wildlife conservation programs in Latin America, the Caribbean, Russia, China, India, and Africa, and is also actively involved in drafting bird conservation legislation and implementing international treaties such as the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. He is the author of A Guide to the Birds of the West Indies and A Guide to the Birds of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
