Hi Don, first of all I'd be reluctant to make any ID from the geo guide. I find it is the absolute worst for sparrows. The behavior alone would rule out White-crown and lean towards Savannah. Check out the new Sibley book- it is great on getting the "jizz" of the sparrows. I would guess a Savannah from your description. They love to run along the ground and "freeze" like little mice.
