I visited on 22 October to add Ring-necked Pheasant to my MD year list and within 5 minutes I had a female walking on one of the mown paths (mind you, this was a fairly hot, midday too!). I walked around for another 30 minutes or so and wihtout trying ( I was sparrowing) easily found a male. This is the ONLY reliable place for the species that I know of in the state. Occasional reports come in from traditional areas around Frederick, Carroll County, and Harford County these days, but all seem to be ephemeral appearances. The Field Notes/North American Birds database illustrates a sharp dropoff in pheasant reports and some seasons have no reports at all. Anyone still needing this species for their state list would be advised to go now!
