Co. birds today In-Reply-To: Message of Fri, 17 Nov 2000 18:19:58 -0500 from Hi Andy (and others) Barry found the Red-headed Woodpecker about where Rob Gibbs told us to go -- that is, walk down Black Hills Trail from the parking area at the northernmost picnic area (the trail starts where the loop road bends around -- in the corner), walk north. Just past the maintenance yard is a grassy/narrow trail down to the right, which looks like it follows a pipeline or some sort of narrow clearing. Where it ends, cut down to the water through the woods (there' re some faint deer trails). Look for the woodpeckers in the dead standing trees -- he had to walk south a bit to get the right light. It may actually be easier to come in from the other side -- there is a paved trail which can be accessed from a housing development. You may not be so close to the trees however, but the light may be better. The R-B Nuthatch was in a single pine tree just at the start of the trail.
