To recognize the contributions of Wallace Carothers, the developer of Nylon, when he was a visiting scientist from the U. of Illinois and Harvard U. at the Du Pont Experimental Station in the early 1930's. Great stuff. ( I worked for the Am. Chem. Soc. for 31 years, from 1967-97) On the way back to Washington, we stopped at Bombay Hook NWR, Kent Co., DE. Because of hunting in the main part of the refuge, (including Raymond and Shearness) we were forced to go "up the road" to Woodland Beach. Among 10,000-plus SNOW GOOSE there, we saw about 20+ "Blue" GOOSE and a single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. (Re this bird - the bill was definitely orange, but a shade more toward the pink shade than orange. Maybe a Greenland form? I really don't have much experience with this species since I've seen it only 4-5 times in the U.S. and then always in the midwest. Sorry, but we haven't been to see the bird in Howard County, and probably won't, since we are off to Trinidad and Tobago for 12 days tomorrow morning. So we cannot contrast bill colors.) The Snows obviously had a great breeding season up north, we estimated that as many as 30% of the birds were young of the year. Along with them there were a relatively small number of Green-winged Teal, Northern Pintail and Northern Shoveler. There were also 9-10 BUFFLEHEAD in the tidal area of B.H. across from Shearness Pool (the part the public could access from the Allee House Road.) Regards to all. D.H.
