As far as variations in song there is only one sound file for each bird but there are some variations. All in all the Thayer software is much much better. The only down side is that it loads images slowly, but usually isn't a big concern. I have a 200 MHZ Pentium, but I'm sure the newer faster chips help in this area. I have no experience with the other item you mentioned, but I do know that the Thayer is supposed to be the best out there.
