Maryland. It was an enjoyable season, with excellent volunteer coverage, just many fewer birds than 1999, 4,462 as opposed to 7,017!! There were 195.7 count hours with 80 count days between 9/02 and 11/30. The great majority of counting was done between 9 AM- 12 noon, very little afternoon coverage was available. Since `99 and 2000 were our only seasons since our beginning in `95 with exceptional coverage, I have only made some comparisons from 1999. Black Vulture- 20 less than 1/2 Turkey Vulture- 718 about same Osprey- 74 as opposed to 115 Bald Eagle- 197 241 Nothern Harrier- 19 less than 1/2 Sharp-shinned- 1,743 2,334 - significant difference Coopers Hawks- 255 only one shy of `99 Northern Goshawk- 4 2 Red-shouldered- 347 - a good season, only species with an increase, up from 299 Broad-winged- 361 - way down from our high record of 1,727 Red-tailed- 533- decrease from 869 Rough-legged- 1 - 0 in 1999 Golden Eagle- 2 - 3 Kestrel- 93- a 50 % decrease Merlin- 22- very close- 26 Peregrine- 7- a 50% decrease.
