Marshall has already posted that Harlequin Ducks in the piedmont are MD/DC Records Committee (MD/DCRC) reviewable species. The boundary between the coast plain and the piedmont region follows the "fall line" which roughly traces US Route 1 as it runs from DC to northeast MD. (I thought there was a map that shows this on the MOS web site, I can't locate it). The review list of which species are reviewable and which ones are not can be found on the MD/DCRC web pages on the MOS web site at: http://www.mdbirds.org/mddcrc/rcreview.html A number of species either are or are not reviewable depending on where in the state they are observed. This information is provided on the review list. Also, a checklist of items to include in sighting reports are contained in the MD/DCRC Documentation Guideline document here: http://www.mdbirds.org/mddcrc/rcguide.html Here is the status of a few of the species that have been recently or are currently being seen ... American White Pelican - Reviewable anywhere in MD or DC. [Note: be sure to note the color and pattern of the secondaries to separate this species from other white pelicans of the world! They could be theoretical escapees] Western Kingbird - Not reviewable (but a great MD find ... I need it for a state bird!) Silver Gull - Not on the state list, so it is reviewable ... my suggestion is to not let the specter of it being an escapee deter anyone from documenting and reporting this species. We are interested in tracking sightings, patterns, and expansion of all unusual species. As an aside, the AOU is very interested in all such sightings and the MD/DCRC would be venue for collecting this data. Black-tailed Gull - Reviewable anywhere Harlequin Duck - Reviewable west of the coastal plain Rufous/selasphorus Hummingbird - reviewable anywhere in MD or DC Ash-throated Flycatcher - reviewable anywhere Western Tanager - reviewable anywhere Le Conte's Sparrow - reviewable anywhere A few other likely/possible MD/DC winter species ... Tufted Duck - reviewable anywhere Barrow's Goldeneye - reviewable anywhere California Gull - reviewable anywhere Yellow-legged Gull - reviewable anywhere Common Murre - reviewable anywhere Thick-billed Murre - reviewable anywhere Spotted Towhee - reviewable anywhere Harris's Sparrow - reviewable anywhere Black-headed Grosbeak - reviewable anywhere Painted Bunting - reviewable anywhere Bullock's Oriole - reviewable anywhere Ross's Goose - if seen other than on the eastern shore Common Raven - if seen south or east of Frederick County Hope this helps. If any questions, fire away ... Thanks.
