From: Harvey Mudd Subject: Harlequin Duck at Black Hills Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Marion and I searched this morning for the female Harlequin Duck spotted yesterday at Black Hills by Barry Cooper and his brother. We spent about an hour (10 AM to 11 AM), along with several others, in the area near where Route 121 crosses the reservoir. No luck on either side of the bridge or in the adjacent coves. We then left and went to the Visitor Center at the end of the main entrance off Old Baltimore Road. A few minutes before we arrived, Dave and Maureen Harvey had located the bird - resting near the pier seen from the observation platform of the Visitor Center. As we all watched, it swam slowly toward the right, heading in the general direction of the boat landing, and disappered behind the trees along the shore that block easy visibility as one looks from the visitor center more-or less west toward the water. Several of us went promptly to the section of the lake shore near which the bird had been when lost to sight, but we were unable to relocate it. A quick dash to the boat landing proved equally futile. We did not go back to the Route 121 bridge. We estimated, with the Harveys, that the bird had been in sight for 20-30 minutes. So the good news is that it had not departed by at least 11:30 AM today; the bad news, that without subsequent reports we are not sure if it is still at Black Hills, and, if so, where.
