I saw a group of ducks in the bay, the first ducks to arrive this winter. I convienently grabbed my astronomy telescope which was aimed at Prospect Bay in front of my house. I noticed the diving ducks were buffleheads, one of the more common species of ducks. I was very excited though because they were one of the better loking birds, with brilliant white and glossy black. For the next three weeks until today i have seen them almost every day that I have looked. As of now i'm starting to get tired of the birds and would like to attract some new waterfowl. Could it be possible that the buffleheads had discluded other species to enter the bay? Since them comming I have only seen mute swans, canadian geese, mallards, and a few common loons. Hopefully, they will migrate away soon, and other waterfowl will come in. Just another way to prove that looks CAN be deciving. Centreville Middle School birding teams will be going to Blackwater, this weekend or next. Will update you on that. Good Birding, Adam M.
