I am heavily into bird photography and was looking for a slide scanner as well. After researching I found that the best slide scanner is the Nikon Coolscan 2000 but carries a hefty price tag at roughly $1,500. The next best one is the Nikon LS30 which compromises a little on image quality but the quality is still very high. It sells for about $725. This is the one I opted for. After spending over 10 grand on camera equipment over the past year I had to try to save some money! I am very happy with it so far and get stunning color prints better than a photo lab on my Epson 870 Photo Printer and using the special Epson paper. The main advantage to the Nikons are the ICE feature which virtually cleans any minor dust, scratches and defects which otherwise need to be cleaned up manually in PhotoShop or similar program. I almost bought the Canon that Raymond has but thought that the ICE feature was well worth the extra money in the long run. The LS30 also comes with a SCSI card and cable so there is nothing else to buy. Hope this helps. I will send you an image that I scanned with it if you want, just let me know.
