However, in this case, he took several (one at a time) and really packed the first one in, then stuffed more on top, then really packed the last one in. I look into the seed pocket that he stuffed, and they were not eaten; at least not until the nuthatch found the cache (I could almost hear his excitement through closed windows). Winter is such a good time to witness common species that we wouldn't otherwise pay much attention to. I thought he was stashing them there, but on inspection it appears to be just a place that he uses to anchor a seed as he opens it. I know Red-bellieds also cache seeds as some of you have described, but I thought it was interesting that they also devise creative ways to facilitate opening seeds.
