At blackwater NWR in Cambridge we were espessialy looking for the golden eagles and many bald eagles that have been seen there recently. Are hopes were also set high for a good diversity of waterfowl. We spent a total of about 4 1/2 hours at the refuge, and saw about only 30 species, witch was very unusuall. HIGHLIGHTS- The highlights of the day would have to be a one golden eagle that sat in front of us on the MD-335 road. Also on the same road we saw 7-8 black-crowned night herons resting in the marsh grasses accros one of the ponds. This was a very interesting sight but all the herons were juvinille. GOLDEN EAGLE- The golden eagle was soaring over head of us as we were looking at hooded mergansers. Getting my binoculars out i saw it diving toward the water. The bird had no white on it at all, and had a goldish tint to it's head. As the bird flew down 2 feet above the water i noticed the wings turned upward unlike a bald eagles. Then, as the bird landed I saw it again i noticed the gold on the head through a spotting scope. I was happy to add this new species to my life list, as well as others were. TOTALS- This is what we saw- - great blue heron (10) - BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS (8) - snow geese (400+) - canada geese (2,000+) - green-winged teal (20+) - american black duck (30+) - mallard (100+) - Shovler (10+) - pintails (50+) - hooded merg (1) - turkey vulture (20+) - Bald Eagle (15 or so) - Northen Harrier (7) - Red-tailed hawk (2) - GOLDEN EAGLE (1) - American kestrel (2) - Killdeer (25) - Lesser yellowlegs (1) - Northern Flicker (3) - american crow (50+) - Eastern bluebird (2) - American robin ( one flock) - Northern mokingbird (4) - Ceder waxwing (2 flocks) - Starlings (too many) - white throated sparrows (2 flocks) - red-winged blackbird Adam W.
