As I turned my head, a cardinal streaked past, not more than a foot away, into a pine tree. Followed immediately by an adult Coopers Hawk, whose wing tip passed literally millimeters from the bill of my baseball cap. It landed in the pine, about three feet from me at eye level. She briefly scanned the interior of the pine for the bird, finally turning her head around and looking me right in the eye. I don't think she knew I was there until then, she exited very quickly.
