Washington Channel, across from red-brick chimney of the Ft. McNair power plant: 1 COMMON LOON in basic plumage Hains Point: 1 adult BALD EAGLE, perched in a large tree just behind rest rooms near the play area; 1 RED FOX, sitting on the 7th tee of the golf course, trying to decide whether to use a driver or a long iron under cold and windy conditions Kenilworth Park: many finches and sparrows in the overgrown area (kudos to the National Park Service's enlightened "no-mow" policy), including numerous HOUSE FINCHES, N. CARDINALS, AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, SONG SPARROWS, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, at least 8 SAVANNAH SPARROWS and 1 AMERICAN TREE SPARROW. In the river over by the National Arboretum, 20 GREEN-WINGED TEAL and 8 HOODED MERGANSER. Anacostia Park and Anacostia River: hundreds of gulls on the three main loafing areas - 90% RING-BILLED BILL, with the other 10% approximately 2/3 GREAT BLACK-BACKED and 1/3 HERRING. A single LESSER BLACK-BACKED (winter-plumaged adult) in the same area I've seen one or two several times since mid-November. No LAUGHING GULLS in evidence. Mike D.H.
