I went out early hoping to catch a good = low tide and decreased wind. The tide was about 1-1/2' lower today then = normal but that was because we still continue to have breezy conditions = with winds continuing from the WNW at 20-22 mph. Temps again in the = mid-teens and low 20's. Substantially more ice today then 12/31/00. Many = hunters about today with many skybusting episodes. Ducks flying high and = fast. Species of note Sanderling 173 (flying and actively feeding in = small groups of 15-20 birds). Northern Pintail 1,800 all feeding in one = large raft right on the edge of SAV. Canada Geese 75 feeding in same = area. Surf Scoter 23 in the deep water of the creek mouth (4' water). = Bufflehead 800 (in areas with more then 1' water). Notable by there = absence Tundra Swan 0, and Dunlin 0. Now a ? for anyone out there who = may shed some light on a species that the Islanders refer to as a Pond = Snout can anyone tell me what is the proper name for this bird. Im at a = loss as to what it maybe but I am assured by the locals that it resides = in small tidal ponds here on the Island and that it has a bill like a = merganser any help appreciated.
