The white-front was of the Greenland race (Anser albifrons flavirostris). It was much smaller than the Canada geese, with an orange bill and very dark black markings on the belly. Before I left Hains Point, the flock of geese took off and headed to the west. There were many geese in the area (including approximately 700 on the ice in the Potomac opposite the Roosevelt Memorial and approximately 1200 on the golf course at Hains Point) so it's conceivable that the white-front could show up anywhere along the Potomac. There were also many gulls on the ice in Washington Channel - mostly ring-bills with good numbers of herring and great black-backs, as well. The only other gull I observed was a first winter lesser black-backed gull. I also had one merlin perched in a tree near Parking Area #9. Good birding!
