Avocet, and Rufous Hummer), Joan was able to pick up several of hers (Harlequins, eider, Purple Sandpiper). Top birds were an American Bittern at Vaughan WMA, Central, shortly after noon, and a Red Knot at Ocean City inlet mid afternoon. Highlights of the trip: Deal Island WMA & Riley Roberts Rd., Somerset Co.; marshes were about 80% frozen; little open water, virtually no waterfowl Tundra Swan--2 Am. Black Duck--1 N. Harrier-1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet-1 Boat-tailed Grackle-20 Route 413 between US 13 and Marion (enroute to Crisfield): Wild Turkey--9 Irish Grove Sanctuary and Rumbly Point Rd., Somerset Co. (marsh and river about 50% frozen; fair amounts of open water; little waterfowl, but a few shorebirds): Killdeer--1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS--2 LESSER YELLOWLEGS--8 LEAST SANDPIPER--1 Pileated Woodpecker--1 Gray Catbird--1 George's Island Landing, east of Stockton, Worcester Co.: GREATER YELLOWLEGS--3 Vaughan WMA, Central Tract, Worcester Co. (all water areas frozen, except along eastern edge): AMERICAN BITTERN--1 Am. Black Duck--100s Song, Swamp, White-throated and Savannah Sparrows in good numbers Ocean City inlet, Worcester Co.: Red-throated Loon--15 Common Loon--4 Double-crested Cormorant--3 Brant--150 COMMON EIDER--1 female, beyond the jetty HARLEQUIN DUCK--4 (3 males, 1 female), before jetty--good looks Long-tailed Duck--20 Red-breasted Mergs--50 Purple Sandpiper--15 (among about 75 Ruddy Turnstones) RED KNOT--1 (with the purples and ruddies) Bonaparte's Gull--40 West Ocean City Pond, about 85% frozen The usual waterfowl assortment and coots; no night herons.
