First off see if you can find a copy of Claudia Wilds' book Finding Birds in the National Capital Area, 2nd Edition. It is published by Smithsonian Press and should still be available at local museum or nature stores. Even though it is beginning to show its age, Claudia's book is the basic reference still to birding many locations in Maryland. The chapter on Assateague Island, prepared by Mark Hoffman, is outstanding and will give you some good ideas for shorebird locations in Worcester County. Other bayside locations in Somerset, Dorchester, and Talbot counties are also discussed. After you digest this book, go to the MOS State website, www.mdbirds.org. Fran has attempted to pull together information on good shorebird locales there. Additionally, go to the MDOsprey archives and sort through those messages for information on more current good shorebird locales. The past year's messages are available (with an excellent search algorithm) at: http://home.ease.lsoft.com/archives/mdosprey.html The MDOsprey archives for the 1997-1999 period reside at: http://mdosprey.home.att.net/ Good luck and, if you locate some previously undocumented good locations, consider writing them up and forwarding them to Fran Saunders, the MOS webmaster, at fcsaunders@worldnet.att.net.
