You might also urge your friend to go over to the Optics for Birding
website ( http://www.optics4birding.com/ ) so they will be a bit more
educated in what to look for in a binocular (regardless of price range).

Further, I would urge that no one ever buy a pair of bins without first
trying them out in the field to make sure they meet that person's needs.
Buying mail-order is great but if you haven't tried them first you may
make an expensive mistake.  That, of course, is why it is a good idea to
join MOS and go on lots of field trips--so you can bug people to let you
try their binoculars.
