As Gail surmises, the Towhee has been looked for without success. The last sizeable group looking for the bird that I am aware of was on Saturday, the 6th. JB Churchill and I also looked for it on the 7th and 13th. I was not able to check esterday and don't know whether anyone else did. I would like to think that Gail and others I've spoken to are right - that it is probably still around somewhere close to where it was found. Areas surrounding the original spot have been searched a number of times but, as Gail also indicates, there is extensive suitable habitat in all directions. A nearby company has several feeders out and those have been checked - although from the roadway. A company official has suggested that closer access was probably not advisable. The feeders can be seen reasonably well from the roadway. I believe the bird would be detectable if it were there. The farmer whose pasture is adjacent to where the bird was found also has birdseed on the ground near his home. This area can be viewed reasonably well by scope from the Canal towpath. Local birders are participating in the C&O Canal Count this Sunday, the 21st, and the Allegany Co. Mid-winter Count is Saturday, the 27th. So, the area will receive at least some coverage. And I will continue to check. Happy trails ....
