The author is Marie Winn. I agree with everything Rick said about this book, including the part about the title giving the impression that it might be a "schmaltzy" story, the last thing I would want to read. When I received a copy as a gift, I had to give it a try and I loved it. What I liked best, perhaps, was the author's ability to convey so much of what we can all relate to in this "culture of birding" -- the jargon, the camaraderie, the skepticism of reports by inexperienced birders, the intensity, disappointments, elations, and the infectious craziness of it all. In fact, I think a lot in this book would be lost on a non-birder. I heard a while back that there was a movie in the works based on this book. Anyone heard anything on this?
