Pat Sutton of the Cape May Bird Observatory has written a book entitled, not inappropriately, How to Find an Owl. She gives lots of general hints there for owls overall and then she discusses the various species with an eye to winter habitat requirements. This is a great place to start. I believe that Claudia Wilds' book also has some introductory material on owl finding. Long-eared Owls for me, the very few times I have seen them, have always been lucky occurrences. I was privileged to have some guidance a number of years ago from Jay Sheppard, a past master at locating saw-whets. Thanks to him, Rick Sussman and I now have at least a glimmering of an idea about habitat requirements etc. for these neat little birds! Best of luck!
