This afternoon, near the little village of Copperville (also near my driveway) I was treated to the road-crossing of 15 lovely little Bobwhites. They were about1/4 mile away from my own property, so I later tried to lure them over by calling to them. Got some very convincing responses from Starlings in my walnut trees, but heard nothing in response from the Bobwhites. One of my neighbors had a non-tilled 30 acre field last summer, and that may have been the successful nesting place for this covey. They used my property for foraging late in the summer, but have been silent for several months. I'm delighted to see that they seem to be successfully avoiding foxes and other predators around here.
