It was determined that they could see trails of urine due to UV light. It was my understanding that the UV was absorbed by the urine, leaving a dark "trail." Other people have told me that the urine reflected the UV. I think this was published in the journal of the Raptor Research. That is how the kestrels know where to perch to look for rodents. I'll check my shelves at home to see if I can find the paper.
