I read the abstract when I located the citation. The authors hypothesize that Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) can evaluate prey density, and habitat-worthiness, by the number of urine trails they see in a given patch. So, they assess how much prey is present and either move on quickly or settle down and start hunting.
