Drove in on River Road checking the overhead wires and then parked at the main impoundments. Walked to the towpath(Horsepen Branch Hiker-Biker) and then upriver to Sycamore Landing looking for ducks. Returned along Sycamore Landing Rd and back through the fields to the impoundments. Not a bad day. Ended up with 38 species. Highlights were a possible Golden Eagle(see my separate posting), 10 Canada Geese, 45 Am. Black Ducks, 2 Green-winged Teal, 13 Lesser Scaup, 8 Bufflehead, a male Common Goldeneye, 16 Common Mergansers(all males), a calling Barred Owl, one Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, an Eastern Phoebe along the river near Sycamore Landing, 6 Winter Wrens(2 along the towpath and 4 at the impoundments) ,72 Cedar Waxwings, and 2 Swamp Sparrows. The Potomac was mostly open with some ice along Maddux Island. Most of the ducks were along the edge of the ice. Also saw a Gray Squirrel walking on the ice drinking from the river.
