The pipits were just adjacent to the first gravel parking lot on the right as you come right into the park and were very easy to observe at short range from the window of a vehicle. Possibly these are the same 3 birds I saw back on New Year's Day at Georgetown Reservoir (Bill Dobbins had seen them there earlier than that). 3 does seem small for a pipit flock. An AMERICAN KESTREL was in Anacostia Park, on a pole over the CSX rail lines, and an adult, winter-plumaged LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (doubtless one of the same 2-3 we've been seeing in this area all winter) was in the gull loafing area right across the Anacostia River from the Navy vessel 933 moored at the Navy Yard. Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens had 3 WINTER WREN and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, in addition to the usual wintering passerines. There were 2 MOURNING DOVES (first I've seen in DC this year) in a holly tree near the Visitor Center at KAG. KAG also had an EASTERN BLUEBIRD. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD D.H.
