Lake Report MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Wilde Lake is about 70% open water. The Great Black-Backed Gulls are still there, as is the female Hooded Merganser that has been wintering at the lake. We saw two Ruddy Ducks, a male and a female (separately), but all the other diving ducks were absent today. Lots of Herring Gulls, Ring-Billed Gulls, Mallards and Canada Geese. We were delighted by the beautiful loud song of a Carolina Wren in a tree just as we were passing it, and there were also a Red-Winged Blackbird and a Cardinal singing -- is this the right time, or are they early this year? Downy Woodpeckers were calling and drumming, and a Red-Bellied Woodpecker hopped around in a tree. As we were leaving a Red-Shouldered Hawk flew overhead. Unfortunately, some of the people along the route we usually walk (along the north side of the lake and a mile or so along the stream) are not keeping their feeders filled, so some of the birds we usually see were scarcer, but we did find of all the usual suspects (Nuthatches, Mockingbird, Chickadees, Titmice, Starlings, Mourning Doves, American Crows, House Finches and Sparrows, White-Throated Sparrows, etc.).
