If it stood up, you might have seen its legs, which are yellowish-green or greenish-yellow, depending on the light. If it flew, you would have seen very little white on any tips of the primaries, whereas, you get a definite look at white on those same primaries on the GBBG. The gape on the Kelp Gull goes much further back (under the eye) than the more "pursed" look of the GBBG. And the iris of the KEGU is a clear, light straw yellow, whereas the iris on GBBG is often yellow, but muddy-looking. Too bad we didn't know you were going to be there--we could have come by. I hope these field marks help after the fact!
