They are so large that they = often merge with the apical tips. When in flight, this gives the wingtip a = very white appearance. The Kelp Gull has only a small mirror on P10 which = is indented significantly from the apical spots. When in flight, the wing = is much darker with the exception of the mirror. Occasionally, you can see = the mirror on the folded wing if the bird is positioned properly. Look for = the underside of the wing on the opposite side of the bird and you can see = the mirror most of the time. Be aware that there are some 3rd winter GBBGs that have yellowish-green = legs. But, they have a red gonys spot with a black ring on the bill. The = Kelp Gull has no black ring. Saw a couple of greater black-backed gulls and a third one which we think may have been the Kelp gull. Can anyone please elaborate on the differences that help ID the Kelp gull? Thanks.
