Appelbaum" Subject: Thanks -- lists, swans, and birders MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Thanks to everyone who clarified for me the details both "official" and not, of what "counts" for a life list. I had no idea someone (in this case, the ABA) had ever spelled this all out so clearly -- I wonder why none of the standard field guides include this info along with their suggestions to keep a list. I don't imagine I'll be submitting my own paltry list anyplace anytime soon, but I enjoyed hearing some other perspectives and learning about the ABA guidelines. I had a feeling non-wild birds didn't "count" but it never would have occurred to me that a bird that's "out of place" like those black swans, might not count. Incidentally, the Central Maryland chapter of the National Audubon Society has a lecture scheduled for April 19 on "The Mute Swan Dilemma." Larry Hindman of the MD DNR is going to speak on the topic. The meeting will be held at the Florence Bain Senior Center in Columbia at 7:30 PM. And as to youthful birders ... there ARE birders who've been born in the last thirty years -- they just don't KNOW they're birders yet. But once they get tired to smashing their bikes into trees and start looking up at what's singing in them, they'll be wondering about how to keep a life list just like me. :D Laura Appelbaum Cloverly, MD ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
