We joined Patty Craig at Patuxent Naval Air Station, Saint Mary's County. Highlights were: * One roadkilled Mink, hit within the hour, at 0730 on Rte. 5 just 3 mi north of the Charles-Saint Mary's County line. In the middle of a cornfield and unlikely mink habitat. I have only seen 1-2 live Minks in MD and this was the first dead one I've seen. * One adult KELP GULL at the Sandgates restaurant, w/ standard assemblage of ducks. * NORTHERN SHRIKE still present at Patuxent Naval Air Station as previously reported. Very coorperative bird posed for photos in numerous views and even allowed some recording of its song (!) over the roar of jet engines. Note that special arrangements are necessary to access the base. * ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Patuxent Naval Air Station near the location that Patty previously reported it (actually across the road from there). Moderately cooperative bird that was first spooked by the shrike, then called intermittently from dense cover, then finally afforded a few decent looks. * 150 DUNLIN and 6+ SANDERLINGS at Cedar Pt., Patuxent Naval Air Station. * A nice assortment of landbirds (Fox Sparrow, both kinglets, sapsucker) at Jefferson Patterson Park, Calvert County. No oriole. * At least 5 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS off Stoakley Rd., in the stream valley beaver pond area 1.9 mi west of Rte. 2/4 out of Prince Frederick, Calvert County. Also present were 5 Red-bellied Woodpeckers, 8 flickers, 2 male sapsuckers, 4 Downy Woodpeckers, and 5 Pileated Woodpeckers (alas, no Hairy). This location was found by Sue Hamilton and reported to us by Patty Craig. Parking is very difficult so please be careful if you look for these birds. * 79 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS at God's Grace Pt., 2 mi west of the woodpecker location.
