We tromped through a muddy corn field and immediately found the Northern Shrike that has been hanging around the area. The looks weren't the greatest in the world (lighting was bad, weather was crumby), but good enough to satisfy myself that it was a Northern Shrike. At one point it was sitting in the top of a tree and coughed up a pellet. A few minutes later Kyle & I were poking around the underbrush looking for a small pellet in wet leaf litter. He ended up with two treasured pellets - his first Northern Shrike pellets! Looks like it is eating small rodents. It doesn't get any better than this! The folks I work with think this is absolutely nuts - isn't it great. Kyle - Thanks for a great time.
