Whilespending winters at Point Lookout State Park in past years I found thatright after snowfalls that WOCO would come to gravel on the very edge ofroadways that had salt and grit (ashes?) spread for snow & ice removal. At PLO for instance the short 200-300 yards of roadway from the stopsign to the Park entrance usually held 8-12 WOCO. Other birds also wouldcome to the edge such as HORNED LARK & FOX SPARROW along with other morecommon sparrow species. For anyone who would like to see the WOCO matingdisplay a great place is to park at the small pulloff in front of whereSister's Place used to be (has been torn down and small for sale signsare up) and wait for the birds to start displaying 15-20 minutes beforeand after sundown. Nothing new to report from Smith Island except itsnows here also. Large #'s of NORTHERN PINTAIL are being reported to meby local waterman as they leave & return to the Island on their dailyquest for oysters and fish. I'll try and get some #'s tomorrow.
