Other years they have used a hanging flower pot and broken grill. There are numerous reports from customers at work about C wrens using boxes. They also seem to like robin nesting platforms for roosting, especially is you provide something for them for warmth. One person I know uses a grapevine "nest" she made and another uses cotton. I have a little roosting pocket, made in england and they like that for roosting too.
