To anyone interested, the Center for Conservation Research & Technology is holding a seminar series at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.  The details are included below.  Take care and good birding, Aaron Haines

Tracking Wild Animals With Satellites.

Seminar Series presented by the Center for Con=servation Research & Technology (CCRT)

First Talk: Plight and Recove=ry of the Peregrine Falcon

Tracking the migration of the Arctic Peregrine Falco=n using satellite biotelemetry technology and GIS mapping systems.

Time: Wednesday February 28, 2001 at 3:30 p.m.     Plac=e: SS Bldg. Room 001

Second Talk: Tracking and Con=serving Swainson=92s Hawks, White-faced Ibis, Common Loons and Stellar=92=s Sea Eagles.

Discussion of satellite tracking results of Swainson==92s Hawks from 1994 to 1996.  Satellite tracking revealed the migration strategy and plight of the =Swainson=92s hawk and offered cues to conserve it.  Discussion of satellite tracking Stellar=92s sea= eagles in Russia, and how this same technology is now being used to inve=stigate sources of chemical contamination affecting White-faced Ibis and =Common Loons in the western US.

Time: Wednesday March 7, 2001 at 3:30 p.m.     Place: SS Bldg. =Room 001

Third Talk: New Technology =Tools In Wildlife Management (New Tools To Track & Monitor Small Wild=life Species)

The talk will foc=us on the development and testing of a new system to track and monitor sm=all birds and bats over long time scales.  The talk will also highlight new developments in satellit=e biotelemetry technology for birds.&nb=sp; The talk will also cover how we use the data, i.e., mapping wi=ldlife movements with GIS (Converting PTT and GPS coordinates to GIS maps= and correlating movements to other GIS maps).  Describe how wildlife tracking data is used with GIS= data layers and remote sensing data.&n=bsp; Examples will feature specific applications on deer movements= in Maryland, and the movements of Broad-winged Hawks, and Snowy Owls.

Time: Wednesda=y March 14, 2001 at 3:30 p.m.  Place: SS Bldg. Room 001

Fourth Talk: Developm=ent and Application of Satellite Tracking and Monitoring Technology from =1981 to the present and the Next Generation of satellite tracking technol=ogy.

Discussion of initial development of satellite track=ing at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, with beginnin=g works on peregrines, eagles, and other species.  The talk will conclude with a discussion of new s=ystems to track and monitor wildlife species on a global scale.

Time: Wednesday March 28, 2001 at 3:30 p.m. Place: SS =Bldg. Room 001
