There's a pretty good book, Birdwatcher's Guide to Hawaii, by Rick Soehren (University of Hawai'i Press, Honolulu, 1996), that really helped me. As for field guides, the only real one I know of is put out by the Hawaii Audubon Society called appropriately enough, Hawaii's Birds. Their address is: P.O. Box 4714 Honolulu, Hawaii 96812-4714 As you probably know, 98 percent of all birds in Oahu are introduced. If going with a non-birding spouse, I'd advise putting your binoculars away on Oahu, playing tourist and saving all of your birding chips for Maui. Had some great walks in the Mikiki Valley and Lyon Arboretum but nothing avian to brag about. Let me know if you need more info.
