Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 07:42:18 EST Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Rick Sussman Subject: Sightings for 3/10 & 3/11 Comments: cc: voice@capaccess.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit 3/10 at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery County, MD : At least 48 (probably more) Wood Ducks, a pair of Northern Shovelers, a pair of American Wigeon, many Ring-necked Ducks, a single REDHEAD, Pied-billed Grebe, Great Blue Heron, 2 TREE SWALLOWS, 6 COMMON SNIPE (2 in the first impound on right, 4 in a wet, grassy field on right), Winter Wren, 2 Hermit Thrushes, a female Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a pair of NORTHERN RIVER OTTERS playing in the wet swampy area along Hughes Rd. (the far eastern side of the "left" impoundment). On 3/11, as Bonnie Ott reported, from Greenbridge Rd. Triadelphia Reservoir, Montgomery County, MD. : 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, many Common Mergansers, Common Loon, Pied-billed and Horned Grebes, Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, 2 Bald Eagles (Howard County side) at nest. On Sunday evening, 3/11, at the UM adult campus on Shady Grove Rd., Rockville MD : at least 4 displaying AMERICAN WOODCOCKS putting on a nice show, rather cold and windy, from 6:30 until about 7 PM. Just before the show started, an adult Red-tailed Hawk hunted over the same fields until nearly dark.
