(Hey, I thought these pesky acronyms were not allowed...) I went to see if I could find any Razorbills on Friday. When I arrived at the Inlet, it was cold and very wet - a brisk wind drove rain down in sheets. No Razorbills, but still plenty of loons (both Common and Red-throated), a few Purple Sandpipers, Bonies, Oldsquaw, Sanderlings, and Ruddy Turnstones. The highlight was a tight knit flock of Harlequin Ducks - they were staying so close to each other I had trouble counting them, but there were at least ten, possibly twelve, of both sexes. Nice. After my optics and I were finally too soaked to bear it any longer, I headed back west. At a McDonald's along Route 50, the first you come to after leaving Ocean City, I found a Laughing Gull in full black hood hanging out with a flock of Ring-billeds looking for french fry handouts from the high school kids who apparently use the place as a hang out. The LAGU looked lonely. That was Friday the 9th. The first LAGU of the spring? You tell me... I think I was still in Worcester County... Tom Stock Silver Spring >>> Mark Hoffman 03/12/01 07:20PM >>> Stan -- You may not realize it, but you are the winner of this year's LAGU (pronounced lae-goo) award, annually given to the first person to spot the first Laughing Gull of spring (in Worcester County). Although this ideal has been freely stolen from Cape May, it is a coveted prize nonetheless ... Congratulations!!
