Lake report MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Folks, I birded Lake Elkhorn yesterday afternoon, and Centennial today, following the 3 p.m. hailstorm there. Sightings: Mon., 12 Mar, Lake Elkhorn: Ring-necked Duck 1 male Hooded Merganser 1 male Ruddy Duck 1 male Tue., 13 Mar, Centennial Lake Horned Grebe 2 (one in winter, and one in partial breeding plumage) Pied-billed Grebe 1 Ring-necked Duck 29 Greater Scaup 18 (14 males, 4 females) Lesser Scaup 4 (2m, 2f) Bufflehead 4 (3m 1f) Common Goldeneye 3 (all female) Hooded Merganser 3 (2m 1f) The scaup were identified primarily by head-shape and profile, and secondarily by the whiteness of the flanks (not totally reliable). There is probably plenty of error in the numbers. They were identified at moderate range with binoculars. All the waterbirds were near the dam, except for the goldeneyes, hoodies, and buffleheads. After l left Centennial Lake, John Maloney and I visited Patapsco River Park, where a pair of Common Goldeneyes was seen on the river.
