As seen elsewhere, Talbot County skies were full of flocks of departing Canada Geese for much of the afternoon on Monday, the 12th. Flock after flock after flock, in very well-aligned V-formations, headed out high and fast, going due north. Today, on Leeds Creek, four Ring-necked Ducks showed up (first of the season out my window, though they have been very abundant in the area), also three Red-breasted Mergansers. Yesterday, a pair of Wood Ducks showed up on the water. They have successfully used a nest box on my property for two years in a row - lets go for three! This morning, on a Bird walk at Pickering Creek Audubon Center, a Phoebe was singing with great enthusiasm, and 32 other bird species were sighted (all quite normal ones. Their skies seemed filled with Bald Eagles, partly because a new Bald Eagle nest has appeared at a sight that can be 'just barely seen' through the trees from the vantage point of their pier. Last Sunday, in a stroke of pure luck, my wife and I were treated to a fly-by of two Bobwhite Quail along Egypt Road near Blackwater, down in Dorchester County. Bobwhites are becoming so rare around here that I now take special delight each time one is seen. And happily, I here them calling here on my property on Tuesday evening of this week. Several Osprey are around, but the nesting has not gotten seriously started here on Leeds Creek yet. And still flipping back and forth with this stream of consciousness report, a Barred Owl continues to grace the grounds of the Easton Courthouse, roosting through the afternoon in plain sight about 30 feet off the ground in some kind of exotic holly-like tree adjacent to Dover Street. At 4 pm, on March 13th, and also on March 6th, the bird was calling proudly to anyone who would listen. This is a pretty busy area, and most people walked right by, neither seeing nor hearing the bird. Great views available.
