Late this afternoon there were 6 male Red-breasted Mergansers at the deep end
of Centennial Lake, Howard County. Also 2 pair of Bufflehead, and one each
Horned and PB Grebe. Closer to the wildlife end was another PB Grebe and 8
Ring-necked Ducks (5m, 3f). No scaup in sight, though I didn't have time to
check out the far west end.

On Sunday, while walking along the Patapsco at Woodstock, I flushed a Black
Vulture from a sand bar where it had been feeding on a dead raccoon. The bird
flew to a nearby tree, very perturbed, and uttered a couple of soft "woof"
sounds in my direction. First time I've heard such a vocalization.
