Highlights were as follows: 6 PIED-BILLED GREBE 10 RING-NECKED DUCK at Hughes Hollow 2 HOODED MERGANSER up to 10 overhead GREEN-WINGED TEAL and a few WOOD DUCK 6 (minimum) YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS above Sycamore Landing, along the towpath. These wintering woodpeckers are staging a big northward movement. Large mixed flocks of AMERICAN ROBIN and COMMON GRACKLE were around too. 16 HORNED GREBES between Seneca and Violette's Lock All but one of these grebes were in fresh, almost complete alternate plumage. A fine sight indeed. Also in the vicinity of the grebes were 2 BUFFLEHEAD 6-10 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS No early passerine migrants (N. Parula or B-G Gnatcatcher or La. Waterthrush) evident yet. There were up to a dozen TREE SWALLOWS at Hughes Hollow, laying claim to the nest boxes. Mike Bowen Bethesda MD D.H.
