The nest is identical to your description. Last year chickadees actually made their nest in this box and laid three eggs. The following week I checked the box and found the squirrel had made a nest on top of the chickadee nest and was in residence. It seems unlikely to me that the flying squirrel would have done in your bluebird but, clearly, our chickadees lost out last year. Also, beware of sticking your fingers in the box when there are babies inside; those beautiful mama squirrels will bite!
