| OWINGS MILLS - Maryland Public Television (MPT)
premieres an all-new edition of
| Outdoors Maryland in April that's guaranteed to
bolster the spirit of spring.
| On  Thursday, April 5 at 8 p.m. Outdoors Maryland
presents "Wild Backyards" for
| viewers who need a break from their fast-paced world,
those who would like to
| add a few critters to their "rat race," or those who
simply want to soothe their
| winterized souls.
| "Wild Backyards" features an impressive collection of
| simple-to-create-and-manage, scaled wildlife
sanctuaries created by local
| homeowners.  The program offers a wealth of
information on how to match
| desirable wildlife with habitat design, making the
best use of backyard space
| available, and caring for, and maintaining, a
mini-Eden.  "Wild Backyards"
| visits homes in Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, and
Howard Counties and tells the
| tales of habitat creators who share their secrets of
success in luring many
| native species of birds, butterflies and frogs.
|     Edith Thompson, coordinator of "Wild Acres," is
on hand to share her
| expertise.   "Wild Acres" is a Maryland Department of
Natural Resources (DNR)
| program.  Thompson  provides information and ideas to
people who want to create
| backyard wildlife habitats.  Thompson is in good
company.  The segment features
| information on butterflies, supplied by Craig Tufts,
chief naturalist with the
| National Wildlife Federation.  Becky Woods, biologist
formerly with Patuxent
| Research Refuge, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
contributes her knowledge of
| frogs.  And wildlife policy director Tom Franklin
with the Wildlife Society in
| Bethesda lends his birding insight.

| A generous supply of splendid video footage and
comprehensive instructions
| combine to teach and empower the potential "Wild
Backyards " creator as well as

| "Wild Backyards" is scheduled for rebroadcast on MPT
