I did some birding with fellow CBC member Ron K. ; we met and birded the Bethel WMA in fine spring weather. We were pleased to find a pair of BLUE-WING TEAL. There were also several pair of RING-NECK DUCK and PIED BILLED GREBE. AMERICAN COOT were everywhere and we had a laugh at their ungainly appearance when splashing down in the water. A lone GADWALL was also present. I spotted my first EASTERN PHOEBE of the spring. A walk on the loop through the woods gave a nice mixture of PINE WARBLER, GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLET and BROWN CREEPER. In the scrubby area back of the impoundment Ron called a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. I continued south after Ron had to call it a day and headed to the Glebe Rd. yacht basin, where I found my first ROUGH-WING SWALLOW of the season, and also on the mud flats at low tide, a single LESSER YELLOW LEGS and 8 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Reasoning that I was already in the neighbourhood, I ventured on a little futher to the Earlville WMA and stood in a scrubby field sorting through dozens of sparrows, finding FIELD, SONG, SAVANNAH and CHIPPING. T he Savannah was most obliging and stayed perched on its`branch while I returned to the car for my scope and did not move while I came tramping back through the scrub. It was great viewing; the yellow supercilium glowed like headlights in the sun. This spot certainly merits further investigation for sparrows, great habitat.
