The behavior you describe is not unfamiliar. It is only the female that has behaved in this erratic manner. I believe it is a territorial/protection action. It reminds me of the behavior of the Mockingbirds when thay protect their nestlings. I have seen them attack dogs, cats and even people. The female Bluebird will most likely settle down and "get down to business" as you mentioned.
