Long Islanders are currently hosting a BLACK-TAILED GODWIT, the Eurasian replacement for the North American Hudsonian Godwit. My Sibley guide has a couple of his green dots for isolated sightings on the Eastern Shore, but this is the first New York State record for the bird. He is a breeding-plumaged male. He stayed in the same spot yesterday from 8 am to 6 pm. I SAW HIM!!!!! Yay! You can even get to within a couple of miles of the site (in Eastport, on the South Shore) by public transportation, and taxis are available at the train station. I have very specific driving directions to the site from another email list, so if anyone is interested, you are welcome to contact me off-list. Eastport is very small, but has many antique shops for the non-birders who might tag along. S.
