Some of us will recall the Black-tailed Godwit which showed up in early summer in 1994 (??? I forget offhand) at Broadkill Beach, DE. We were called by Ellen Short and immediately dropped everything at about 2 pm one day and went over (driving first fast fast fast and then slow slow slow as we went through the little speed-trap towns in Delaware.) After a few days the bird departed, and what was almost certainly the same individual showed up at Pea Island on the Outer Banks, where we managed to see him again in July when we went down for a pelagic trip. Black-tailed Godwits, while superficially like Hudsonian Godwits, are much taller, more upright birds and in alternate plumage, simply superb!
